LOVE LETTERS TO US FROM WHITEHALL OWNERS
Nothing makes Marie and I happier than to hear back from happy Whitehall owners. And we get a lot of letters over the year. Now it’s the time to take a look back at some of the great correspondance we have received.
Here are a few samples. The first is from Jeffrey Covill who had just received his new Tyee 14 sailing model.

Hi Marie:
It’s Saturday 9/29 and we just had our first outing with #409.
THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR CONCEIVING, BUILDING, AND DELIVERING A PHENOMENAL BOAT! She exceeds every expectation we had and every promise you made came true. This kind of professionalism and customer commitment is becoming rarer in this world, yet you all delivered!

Wow! Kind of makes me feel all warm and fuzzy! Here’s another letter and photos from Clair Fancher down on the Waccamaw River in South Carolina.
We took delivery of our Whitehall Spirit 14 in October of 2001 in Rhode Island and retired to SC in 2006. We are 2 miles from the ocean (not where we row) and 1 1/2 miles from the InterCoastal Waterway (where we do row). We were lucky to find our ideal retirement place, in a golf community near the ICQ and the ocean.

This summer we bought a 25' "Dockominium" on the ICW on the Waccamaw River at
.the Wacca Wache Marina We bought it primarily as an investment and for a future boat, but as you can see, we sometimes keep the Spirit there, Slip D-14. With diminishing availability of water access in this area, we thought it would be wise to buy a slip now.

I row three or four times a week from the marina. It is 20 miles to the ocean (Georgetown, SC) via the waterway. The Waccamaw is a tidal river, fluctuating 3 1/2 feet at the marina, pushing fresh water north, then south with the low tide at the ocean. It is always interesting, considering the current, fluky winds, and the big boats going south for the winter and then north for the summer. Some slow down passing the marina, a no wake zone, but others don't. I have gotten to enjoy the big guys, rowing stern to their wake and surfing for a few yards.

As you can guess, the Spirit is by far the smallest boat in the marina, but I have the same problem stated by other owners - everyone who sees the boat wants to talk. I have to allow extra time for my outings. A few have asked if I built it, and are surprised that it is fiberglass when they look close. One yacht captain envied my maintenance level, another my fuel mileage.

Our slip is at the back of the marina, so I must row the full length of the other slips to reach the ICW. Plus there is an outdoor restaurant at the fuel dock. People usually stop what they are doing and stare in admiration. Pride of Spirit ownership is a huge joy and a responsibility. So I always keep the lines properly secured, the fenders stowed, the hull clean, etc. It is such a beautiful boat to see, doing what it was built to do. Even when it is just sitting on the trailer in the garage, it represents functional art at its finest.
Next week is to be back in the 70s and clear. Guess where I'll be.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Clair Fancher

Here is another letter from local owner Brian O’Farrell who has a Tyee 14 rowing/slide seat model. Single guys take note! Chicks dig it!

Hi Harold and Marie:
I trust the Solo launch was a success. I saw one of your Solo 14s this summer. They look terrific! My guess is that my next Whitehall will be a Whitehall Spirit 17; but the girls may want a Solo 14 or, more likely, I may want a Solo 14 so the girls will leave my Tyee Spirit to me.
After having my Tyee Spirit stored outside at Van Isle Marina for about a year, I’ve now got a place in Sidney with a garage. My truck sits in the driveway and my boat is stored safely inside. I also oiled the teak this summer and the boat looks terrific.
Can’t tell you how much I’ve enjoyed the Tyee Sprit and I haven’t even gone anywhere in it. But I just love poking around Tsehum Harbour.
I must tell you that my Tyee Spirit 14 is a “chick magnet”. The “chicks” I’m referring to are the good-looking seniors who come over to check out the boat (and its crew?) when I dock. I kid you not. Works better than a Bichon Frise.

Finally a letter of high praise for Whitehall ‘s attention to individual needs from David Wagner who is one of North America’s most renowned curators of wildlife art and a noted author who has just published an incredible book on historical wild life art. There’s a link to his website in the letter.

Greetings Harold, Greetings Marie :
Hello from the western shore of Lake Michigan where November has blown in with a furry after what seemed like the most perfect October on record.
We've been putting our Whitehall Spirit to good use all season long, before a backdrop of the Santiago Calatrava-designed Quadracci Pavilion for the Milwaukee Art Museum (named by Time magazine as “Best Design of 2001") and Summerfest (the nation's largest outdoor music festival).

And we continue to receive ooo's and ah's of praise from seasoned boaters at places like Door County, WI or the Milwaukee Sailing Center where we kept our Whitehall for the first time this season. Fortunately, my lifestyle as a writer –
http://www.american-wildlife-art.com and as a private curator for a fellow Canadian who lives and works not far from you http://www.robertbateman.ca/events.html afford us a schedule flexible enough to go rowing when the spirit moves us.
And there's no better boat for a day on Lake Michigan than our Whitehall. P.S. The
davits you sent to hoist our Whitehall work like a charm (and I'm amazed by their strength), not to mention the customized ladder which makes it so easy to climb back in after a swim on a hot summer's day, and the tiller you transformed from sailing to rowing -- operated here in the attached photo by my pretty coxswain, Neli.
Happy Sailing, Dave
