What is it about People?
We had two orders come in this month for Solo 14’s that each gave us much more than the money received. Both were from people as different as could seem possible and who were located 2000 miles apart.
The thing that they had in common was that they were buying the boat for their mates, aka their true loves, as a birthday gift! Two in one week - this has never happened before. What a statement of love and caring.
One was a couple well into their golden years with the husband buying the boat for his wife who has her heart set on rowing. The other was a much younger couple, where the woman purchased the boat for her guy who found the boat online and couldn’t get it out of his mind.
The birthday cards each loved one received contained a picture of the boat. Their boats will arrive on our next truckload.
Why am I telling you this story now? I could maybe have waited until the February issue of the newsletter. The reason I’m including it here is precisely because these folks did not wait until Valentines Day. They did not wait until the weather got better either. Or until the economy improved and things got back to “normal”.
No – they moved ahead at the start of winter during the economic uncertainty of 2009.
“Ah, but love isn’t logical,” you might say. Yes, and no. These folks saw a good boat that vastly exceeds normal standards, is extremely safe and will very likely extend the lives of their loved ones while keeping them happier and healthier.
Most people at this time are indecisive and keep finding reasons to postpone the things they really want. It’s a kind of paralysis that is stopping the economic breakthrough we all need.
Yet these folks did not wait. They followed their hearts instead of their heads and made a very happy decision. They saw the possibility that rowing could open the door for the better health, happiness and longer lives of their loved ones – so they ordered.
We’d like to thank every one of you who has ordered their boat during the past year. You put a lot of faith in us and we are deeply grateful. We’re hearing from some of you and share this below.
Thanks for spending the time out of your busy lives to read this newsletter.
In this newsletter you’ll find Dr. Jonathon Degnan’s latest Docside submission and he invites you to write in with any questions, suggestions or comments. Mike Hagman writes about fishing in a Solo 14 and how amazed he is with his catch. We also announce our new eco-partnership with the Sierra Club of BC.
Doc Side by Dr. John Degnan – Another Mile of Blood Vessels
Good morning fellow rowers and today a special welcome to the seasoned ones that worked hard to build our wonderful NORTH AMERICA. Therapy usually starts with a goal so I am going to ask you to dig out that old shoebox of memories. In it find a flattering photo of yourself, sit down, close your eyes and take a trip....feel yourself in your old Chuck Taylors, and lets go!
Whitehall Rowing and Sail has built for each of us a time capsule with which we can row your physique back in time. The physiology of non-contact aerobic exercise is ideally suited for the aches and pains that have ever so slowly crept into our lives.
Your blood not only carries oxygen to the cells but also the waste products away. The more you exercise the more efficient this process becomes. Lastly a pound of fat is not only ugly, it requires over a mile of blood vessels, which contributes nothing to your health...SO think about how much less work your heart has to do with each pound you row away.....
Strength and honor

We received the follow letter from Michael Hagman about fishing a month or so ago and a call from him last week saying that it’s still happening.….
Fish love the sound of the Solo…
Just wanted to tell you about a magical rowing trip. Was rowing in Pass Christian trolling with a small fishing lure and of course rod and reel. “Bam!” as Emeril would say, the rod and real disappeared from the Whitehall. Rowed back to the house for a new rig and a bungy cord to hold the new one to one those small anchoring devices on the boat. Should have known better before. I caught numerous and large speckle trout in a morning and afternoon trip. We never catch these, almost ever, off of a powerboat.
I don’t know if you know about something called an acoustic signature of a boat? The waves and motion of the boat make certain sounds. Some boats are lucky (sport fishing boats will advertise themselves as known fish raisers and some are not) depending on the sound of the hull and vibrations of the engines etc.
I think the rowing and the sound of the Whitehall Solo 14 just raises or stimulates interest from the fish. Why would they hit lures when there are abundant live bait in the water? The trout were sometimes trophy sized and even the smaller could have torn the rod and reel out of the boat if it were not anchored.
Whitehall eco-partners with the Sierra Club of BC
Your Sierra Club of BC Membership will bring good fortune to all by providing a 1.5% donation of the purchase price of our products to the club. By eco-partnering with the club in this way we’ll help them fulfill their mandate, which in turn helps keep the waters and wilderness we all love so much from pollution and other unsound practices. Give us your club membership details at time of ordering.
Check out the nice article they placed in their newsletter

Here’s the clamp-on style gear mount made for the Solo 14 gunnel. It fits rod holders, mirrors etc. that all can be seen and purchased at
