The Sea Education Society, known as SEA was formed in 1971. Based in Woods Hole, in the southwestern corner of Cape Cod, SEA provides a unique opportunity for undergraduate students to study oceanography, maritime studies and nautical sciences aboard one of three ocean going sailing research vessels.
The most recent vessel is the 134’ brigantine the ‘Robert C. Seamans’ which was built in Tacoma Wa. and launched in 2001.
Whitehall Rowing & Sail was selected as the builder and supplier of the ship’s rowing and sailing tender, a Whitehall Spirit 17.
The first official duty of the Whitehall Spirit was assisting during the christening ceremony of the ‘Robert C. Seamens’
The Whitehall Spirit 17 is now called the ‘Gene’ named after the wife of Dr. Seamans. For the past three years the ‘Gene’ has traveled the high seas helping students and crew enjoy learning practical seamanship and small boat handling under oars and sail.
